Abstract: The enigmatic figure of the ‘Nazi next door’ began appearing in American newspapers, films, and literature nearly as soon as the end of World War II – and persists to this day as a common trope. This talk examines the role of the immigrant Holocaust perpetrator in the American media imagination over the last eighty years, comparing it to Dr. Aubin’s research on the real lives of accused perpetrators and collaborators in the post-war United States. Dr. Aubin will also discuss how media narratives surrounding these men and women both shape and are shaped by persistent American misunderstandings of the Holocaust and the people who perpetrated it.
Dr. Claire E. Aubin is a Lecturer in History at the University of California, Davis, specializing in the post-war US immigration of Holocaust perpetrators and contemporary American antisemitism. Her work often explores themes of individual agency and identity in the context of Holocaust perpetration, as well as examining the long-term personal and cultural repercussions of Holocaust perpetration, post-war immigration, and the ongoing search for justice. More recently, she has undertaken research on antisemitic visual cultures and Holocaust instrumentalization in contemporary American right-wing political activism.
